Mobile Monday: What Makes A Good Phone Case?

At Phone Medics + PC, we’re here for you when your phone gets damaged, but we also want to help you protect your phone from damage. That’s why we sell a variety of cases to help you keep your phone safe.

Certain things in life are inevitable. The old joke goes that the only two certainties in life are death and taxes, but the truth is, there are a few more things that you can’t really escape. One of them is a dropped phone. If you own a cell phone, then sooner or later it’s going to get dropped. Maybe you let your kid play with it and they drop it, maybe it gets knocked off a table by a careless elbow, or maybe it just plain slips out of your hand, but at some point, your phone is going down.

The best thing you can do to prepare yourself for that fateful day is to have your phone in a good case. But what, you may ask, makes for a good case? That’s an excellent question. The truth is, there are a lot of cell phone cases out there, some can be had for only a few dollars, others can cost $100 or more. Knowing which one to buy – or even where to start – can be tricky. While any case is better than no case at all, there are a few features you can look for to help you make the best decision.

Drop Protection

The first thing you want to look for is, of course, drop protection: how well will this case protect my phone from drops and other impacts? Most dropped phones land on a corner, while many others land flat, either face up or face down. So the first thing you want to look at is how well the case protects the corners of your phone. After that, take a look at the protection for the back of the phone. Is there any cushioning? Finally, take a look at the front: does the case have a raised edge on the front, so that it sticks up above your phone’s screen? If so, that means that when you drop your phone, the case will hit before the screen, meaning it’ll be the case that takes the force of the impact, rather than the glass screen.

Hard shell cases, soft shell cases, and hybrid cases tend to have decent protection for the corners, the front, and the back of your phone. A hard shell case is a hard plastic shell that goes around the back of your phone but leaves the screen uncovered (though usually with the raised edge to protect your screen from face-down drops). A soft shell case is typically a simple silicone case that covers the same parts of your phone as a hard shell case. A hybrid case is the best of both worlds, usually consisting of a silicone shell that goes over your phone, and a hard plastic shell that fits over the silicone, giving you the rigidity of a hard shell case with the cushioning of a soft shell case. Unfortunately, hybrid cases can be a bit on the bulky side.

Screen Protection

The next thing to look for is screen protection. While you can (and should!) get a separate screen protector if you get a hard, soft, or hybrid case, there are also cases that come with their own screen protection built in. Folio cases (a.k.a., flip cases or folding cases) have a folding cover that protects your phone’s screen when you aren’t using it, and folds around to the back when you are. Folio cases offer a variety of special features – some have wallet-like pockets to store your credit cards and drivers license, others can be folded to act as a stand, so you can use your phone to watch videos without having to hold it or prop it up. Unfortunately, folio cases only protect the screen of your phone when the cover is in place, so if you should probably get a screen protector.

Debris Protection

Another thing to look for in cases is protection from foreign material – dust, debris, water, etc. Heavy duty cases – also sometimes called rugged cases – try to accomplish exactly that, and usually do a good job of covering the other bases in the process. These cases can be a bit on the bulky side, but they usually offer excellent drop protection, covers for your phone’s ports to protect them from dust and dirt, and many come with an integrated screen protector. Many are even waterproof.

When you visit our repair facility at 91 E. Merritt Island Causeway in Merritt Island, you’ll find a wide selection of cases to keep your phone safe. What you won’t find is a lot of cases that won’t get the job done. There are plenty of cases out there that look pretty but aren’t sturdy enough to keep your phone safe. You won’t find many of those cases in our facility, because we’re dedicated to keeping your phone as safe as possible.
